Heart Verses
Proverbs 4:23- "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life."
One of the most important things we can do with our lives is guard our heart. Matters of the heart affect our lives.
Psalm
37:4, 5, 7: "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you
the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in
Him, and He shall bring it to pass...Rest in the Lord, and wait
patiently for Him."
Instead of being worried about how it
will work out and who we will marry we're supposed to just wait on Him,
and in the meantime, delight fully in Him.
Romans 14:23- "Whatever is done without faith is sin.”
God
reminds us through this verse to always seek His word for direction in
all areas of our lives including romance. We're supposed to pray, ask
God for verses to confirm His direction, and follow them. To make
important decisions without knowing they're what God wants us to do is
to sin.
Deuteronomy 6:5- "Love the Lord your God with all
your HEART, with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all
your strength."
It would be hard to love God with all of
our hearts if we give it freely to whoever asks, with no intention of
marriage planned as the result of that relationship. We should entrust
our hearts to God.
I Corinthians 7:32-35- “But I want you
to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the
Lord--how he may please the Lord. But he who is married cares about the
things of the world--how he may please his wife. There is a difference
between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things
of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she
who is married cares about the things of the world--how she may please
her husband. And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a
leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord
without distraction.”
As singles, we should only be
focused on serving God. When we get married, we will have plenty of
time to focus on our spouse. God tells us this not to make us feel
restricted, but so that we can serve Him without having distractions in
the way.
I Corinthians 7:27- "Are you loosed from a wife [husband]? Do not seek a wife [husband]."
We don't need to be out searching for a spouse, but just trusting Him.
James
1:17- "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes
down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or
shadow of turning."
This verse is God's gentle reminder
that every time we get tired of waiting for our spouse, every good gift
is from Him, and there will be no doubt in our minds that it's His
will.
I Corinthians 13:4- "Love is PATIENT, love is KIND, it is not self-seeking..."
True
love and God's best for us can only be gotten from waiting patiently
for it. Also, true KINDNESS is not self-seeking, and therefore, a
relationship with the One shouldn't be started to benefit ourselves,
but the other person.
I John 3:16- "By this we know love,
because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our
lives for the brethren."
True love is love like Christ's,
which is love that lays down our loves for others. To truly know how to
love, we must first lay down our lives for others in service,
sacrifice, and ministry starting with God first. This takes practice
and time and should be done before getting into a relationship.
Song of Solomon 2:7b, 3:5b, and 8:4b- "Do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases" and Ecclesiates
3:1 & 5b- "To everything there is a season, a time for every
purpose under heaven...A time to embrace, a time to refrain from
embracing."
There is a specific time in our lives that God
created for us to have love...and we believe that, based on the many
other verses above, that time is very near marriage, if not within
marriage. Therefore, casual relationships have no purpose in our lives.
Psalm 138:8- "I will perfect EVERYTHING that concerns you."
Whenever
we think that this is ridiculous, that we should give up waiting, and
that we couldn't possibly trust God with this area of our lives, God
reminds us of this verse and the ones that follow, which clearly show
that God has a plan and knows the future and we should not worry!
Phillipians
4:6, Matthew 6:25a, Luke 12:22a-"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is
its own trouble."
We don't have to worry about anything in
our future. True peace comes from trusting that God knows your future,
and holds everything in His hands.
Jeremiah
29:11-13-"`For I know the plans I have for you,' says the Lord. 'They
are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a
hope (NIV). Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I
will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search
for Me with all your heart (NKJV).'"
God knows all the
plans He has for us including who we will marry, and there is no need
to worry about who that person will be. He will give us answers after
we have sought Him with our whole heart.
